HEADWATERS / ABOUT ANDREW

I help people discover what makes them come alive — and find their way back to it.

Whether you’re an athlete trying to play with freedom, an entrepreneur trying to find your footing, or a student who’s intimidated by the college process — the work is the same. And it starts with getting to know yourself.

01 / THE STORY
Andrew Bednarzik on the sideline, looking down the field.

I’ve been where you are.

I grew up playing competitive club soccer outside Washington, DC, with big goals and a lot of pressure — most of it self-imposed. I was determined to get into an elite school. I took the SAT five times. I wanted to play college soccer and pursued recruitment while managing the academic pressure of applying to some of the most prestigious universities in the northeast. I ultimately got into Columbia University and played Division I soccer there.

What I didn’t have — and what nobody around me had either — was any awareness of what was happening mentally. I experienced significant performance anxiety throughout my playing career. There were moments I wondered if I had what it takes. There were stretches where the joy of playing got buried under the weight of expectation.

I didn’t have language for any of it. And, looking back, I wish I’d had an expert to help me make sense of it.

That experience changed the direction of my life.

02 / WHAT I’VE LEARNED SINCE

Here’s something I wish someone had told me when I was that anxious club soccer player.

Most athletes — most people — wonder at some point whether they have what it takes.

That doubt isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s part of the journey.

Real strength isn’t being automatically “mentally tough” or never struggling. It’s the courage and persistence to keep showing up anyway.

SOMETHING ELSE I’VE LEARNED

Acceptance precedes change.

Lasting growth doesn’t come from hustle, hacks, or self-judgment. It comes from getting to know yourself — understanding what drives you, befriending the parts of you that feel sticky or uncomfortable, and working with yourself instead of against yourself. That’s what leads to real, sustainable change. On the field, in the boardroom, and in life.

03 / WHAT WORKING WITH ME LOOKS LIKE

I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every athlete, entrepreneur, and student I work with is different — different challenges, different strengths, different histories, different goals. The work we do together is always built around you specifically.

What stays consistent is the philosophy: we start with understanding. Before we build new tools or habits, we get clear on what’s actually going on — what’s driving the patterns, what’s underneath the struggle, what you’re really up against. From there we build practical, immediately usable strategies that fit your life and your sport or work.

WHY I DO THIS WORK

The moments I live for are the ones where I watch something shift — when a client reclaims a part of themselves they’d lost touch with. A weight lifted off their shoulders. A return to something that felt lost.

04 / THE BACKGROUND I BRING TO THIS WORK

I’m a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with over a decade of experience working with athletes, entrepreneurs, and students. I’m a Sport Psychology professor at Mars Hill University, where I’ve spent years learning how to make complex psychological concepts accessible and immediately applicable. I’m the Mental Performance Coach for Asheville City Soccer Club (USL2) — ranked #1 in the country in 2025. And I’ve spent 24 years tutoring hundreds of high school students through the SAT, ACT, and college application process.

I’m also a parent of two competitive adolescent athletes. I’ve coached from the sideline, supported them through frustration and self-doubt, and felt the particular helplessness of watching your kid struggle and not knowing how to help. That experience informs everything I do with the families I work with.

I’m currently completing the final requirements toward my Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) credentialing — the gold standard in the field of mental performance.

Let’s talk.

I work with athletes, entrepreneurs, professionals, students, and families across all four of my services — Mental Performance Coaching, Sport Psychology, Therapy for Entrepreneurs & Professionals, and Test Prep & College Consulting.

If you’re not sure which path is right for you, that’s okay. The free discovery call exists exactly for that reason. It’s just a conversation — about where you are, what’s getting in the way, and whether working together makes sense.

I’d love to help you find your way back to what makes you come alive.
